re: “Do you consider text in another language to be racist?” Racist, not quite. Appropriative—yes. Personally, for Rromani/Pavee languages, (I can’t speak for any other peoples or their languages) I’d be really upset to see a gadje tattooed with a word/phrase/whatever of ours. For many of us, our language is something that we fiercely protect, and with good reason: more and more Rromani children grow up not knowing amari chib because of integration (among other factors), forced or otherwise. Whole dialects were wiped out during the Porrjamos and will likely never be recovered; others today have only a few speakers. So if I saw a gadje with a tattoo in Rromani chib, I feel like it would cheapen that a lot.
